July 4th: How it changed the world

No other city is more fit to celebrate July 4th than Philadelphia. The first capital of the United States, Philadelphia is, historically, the most important city in the country. Viewed on a long enough time scale, it could be argued that Philadelphia has been the most important city in the world over the past 300 years. As a tribute to July 4th, I think it reasonable to understand the magnitude of what occurred here 232 years ago. (more…)

Is Greenspan to blame?

A media war recently has pitted the former “guru” of central banking against pundits who claim that he is to blame for the current housing crisis. Mr. Can-Do-No-Wrong of the 1990s is now being accused of sacrificing the long term to save the short term crisis that existed when the tech bubble burst. How much of an effect did long lasting low interest rates have on the housing bubble in America, that is now threatening to throw the economy into a recession, or possibly worse? And is Greenspan’s argument that the run-up in housing being a worldwide phenomenon exalt him of any wrong doing in this matter? Those issues are discussed below. (more…)

The emergence of the Libertarian Party

With Hillary Clinton winning in New Hampshire, the Democratic race all of a sudden became anyone’s game once again. What initially looked like a walk through for Clinton had seen the pendulum swing towards Barack Obama and now back again. At this point in the race, with Clinton’s name recognition, I would expect her to come out of the race the victor. (more…)

Seeds of change in Myanmar

With monks protesting in Myanmar and the United Nations sending personnel to the country, the situation has gone from a mild annoyance to an international issue. With President Bush’s speech today regarding plans to increase sanctions against Myanmar, the seeds of change have now been sown in one of the most repressive countries in the world. (more…)
