No other city is more fit to celebrate July 4th than Philadelphia. The first capital of the United States, Philadelphia is, historically, the most important city in the country. Viewed on a long enough time scale, it could be argued that Philadelphia has been the most important city in the world over the past 300 years. As a tribute to July 4th, I think it reasonable to understand the magnitude of what occurred here 232 years ago.
Near the end of the of the 18th century, the 13 colonies had become quite a powerful economic force. On the wings of the British empire, they had brought in technological advancements, political and economic knowledge and had virtually become self-sustaining. But the British had not pursued growth in the new world for the betterment of people everywhere. Their motives, as are the motives of virtually all people, places, and things, was to create profit. The soon to be “American” taxpayer was paying money to the British on all of the blood, sweat, and tears they labored for, without any real benefits coming their way. While this was certainly a point of contention, it was status quo for many decades, until the British passed the Stamp Act, increasing the taxes required from the new world. This set in motion an angry revolution, and this feeling of contempt for taxation could be the basis for why the Constitution specifically forbade income taxes (which of course we now completely ignore).
In 1776, without any real understanding of what to do next, simply knowing they hated the taxes, leading members of the country got together in Philadelphia’s City Hall to declare that they would no longer pay the taxes. They wrote it in a document with a title declaring their independence from Britain. This Declaration of Independence changed the world forever. Never before in history, had a group of people removed themselves from their colonizers. Until that point in modern history, once a land was colonized, it was governed by outside forces, be it the original colonizers or whoever conquered the original colonizers. This event set into motion similar events throughout the world over the next century or so. Peru split from Spain in 1821, Brazil split form Portugal in 1822, South Africa in 1910, etc. etc. and an era of self-governance began.
After the Revolutionary War, which was won despite the well known military power of the British, the colonies were now free to govern themselves. Every state had their own laws, and they virtually had nothing to do with each other. The situation was far more similar, politically, to the current situation in the former Soviet states. Using today’s terminology, if the situation continued in that direction, we would probably have 50 countries, instead of 50 states, and the continent would be split much like Africa is today. Some would be monarchies, some would be dictatorships, some would be poor, and others would be middle income. Only one thing is for certain, with that many governments in that close proximity to each other, wars between these countries over land and natural resources would have been commonplace, and the history of the world would be changed forever.
Instead, the Europeans saw holes in the colonial structures and began coming over again seeking to exploit the new world’s weakness in the late 1780s. The problems with the current structure became very obvious to all sides, and once again, representatives were sent to Philadelphia to solve the problem in 1789. Now these people had a monumental task. How could they join all these different, distinct colonies into 1 entity for defense purposes, but keep all the states virtually politically and economically free of each other. How could a national government be formed that took backseat to the state governments. How could they severely restrict power in the national government, and not have the possibility of having a tyrannical lunatic running the show. By splitting power between different branches of government and reserving all powers to the states that were not specifically discussed, the Constitution established a bunch of States that were United for defense purposes, but otherwise, were completely separate entities. The United States thus was born in 1789. While it seems so obvious now, the set up of the government was brilliant. Once again, never before had any nation experimented with dividing power among many entities. This system of checks and balances was a system that has now been copied all over the world, but had never really been used before that time period in the same way. This political innovation was the 2nd great accomplishment this nation had created, before it even became a nation.
This Independence Day, let us remember how the birth of America has changed the world forever. While many people believe, with some truth perhaps, that the American empire is on the decline, the great American experiment has changed the way people live. Never before have so many people been so prosperous, have we attained this much global peace for this long, and have people lived longer, healthier lives. The birth of America was a shining light that has begun to illuminate the global landscape
