The story of Milton Hershey, the man who founded the confectionary giant, Hershey, is a story in perseverance and risk taking that led to triumph. In many ways, it represents what the average human being can do if they commit themselves to a particular goal.
At the age of 14, Hershey worked in the confectionary industry, being a ‘apprentice’ to an already existing candy maker. 4 years later, he went out on his own in an attempt at entrepreneurship, which ended up being a miserable failure. He closed down his first store a short time later and moved to Colorado with his father to find work with another man in the same industry. Bit with the business bug, however, he quit that job just a short time later and once again with the help of his father, went back into business for himself on the east coast. For the second time in a row, the business failed and he closed down shop, disappointed. But like every great entrepreneur, he overcame adversity and never gave up on his goal.
By the age of 29, he was on his 3rd business. Unlike the first two, this one was to succeed marvelously. Ironically enough, studies on entrepreneurship today have shown that successful businesspeople often fail in their first two attempts at business. His manufacturing of caramel goods became quite a success, despite his parents having given up on him. Funding for the business came from a friend instead of his parents, one of the great obstacles that Hershey was able to overcome. After several years in the business, Hershey saw opportunity in another area - chocolate. He had seen the Swiss produce a chocolate substance with milk that was very popular in Europe and had been trying for many years to perfect the recipe for such a confection. After seeing a great opportunity in the market, Hershey risked everything he owned, once again, by selling the caramel company to produce the Hershey milk chocolate bar.
As it grew in popularity, Hershey bought machines to mass produce them, which turned Hershey into a household name and introduced chocolate for mass consumption in America. Today, nearly every chocolate candy sold is a subdivision of the Hershey name, and his success enabled him to live on through philanthropic efforts in the Hershey school, a privately funded school for under-privileged children. In addition, the success of his efforts has provided the livelihood for generation of families in middle Pennsylvania and the entire city exists basically because of his genius.
Hershey’ success did not come easily and his hard work and perseverance were well rewarded. His is the story of the American dream, where a person from an average background can achieve incredible results.
